Our closest “city,” just a 30 minute drive and tucked into a valley nested in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Asheville has been called “Paris of the South” as well as having been named among the 50 most alive places to live and the best places to retire. In July 2007 “Outside Magazine” selected Asheville as its choice of the “Best Southern Town”. Here is what the magazine said about Asheville: “Cradled in a lush green bowl and surrounded on all sides by the Appalachian Mountains, this is an island of liberal alternative culture. This area serves up more than 2000 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails and some of the nation’s finest white water creeking.” It is hard to keep up with this university towns list of bests, whether it is top city to live, retire, work, or visit. Asheville has been highly rated in magazines such as Outside, Money, Vacation, Men’s Journal Forbes, Southern Living, Expansion Management, The Industry Standard and GoVeg.com The Asheville Metro Resource Center of the Chamber of Commerce recently presented Asheville as ranking 12th in the nation for metropolitan area home appreciation.
Access points located throughout the area creates ease of use and enjoyment of outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities to one of the most popular units of the National Park System. “America’s Favorite Drive” winds its way 469 miles seemingly endless vistas and mountain meadows. The Parkway incorporates several recreation areas, some exceeding 6,000 acres. These parks within the Parkway have visitor centers, camp grounds, picnic areas, trails and, in many instances, concessionaire-operated lodges, restaurants, gas stations and other facilities.
Lake Lure, nestled between the Piedmont region and Appalachian Mountains is a short trip. Aside from its scenic view and friendly residents, Lake Lure has been a well known area for filming of movies such as, Dirty Dancing, Forrest Gump, The Passion of the Christ, Last of the Mohicans, A Breed Apart, My Fellow Americans and more. The man-made lake offers 21 miles of shoreline, and is as deep as 115 feet at some points. In addition to scenic views, Lake Lure offers plenty of outdoor recreation, everything from water skiing and lake touring to fishing and even a scenic area to hike.
Is the perfect place to reconnect with nature and spend time with family and friends. The Park offers the best of the mountains in one place-spectacular 75-mile views, hiking trails for all ages, a 404-foot waterfall, a variety of special events and much more.
